Who we are
Somali Rehabilitation and Development Agency (SORDA) is local non-governmental non-political and non- profit seeking organization that engageimprovement of livelihoods through promotion of social services, Public Health, Water & Sanitation, Emergency responses, Environment, Human rights, Income generation program andHIV/AIDS prevention awareness, SORDA strives to prevent injustice practices and enhances peace and reconciliation process among Somali communities. SORDA has a strong bias in ensuring environmental protection and resilience of communities.
SORDA was found in July, 1993 by a group of Somali intellectuals and Local leaders including women, the minority clans and the Persons with Disabilities aimed at addressing the complex political emergency in Somalia following the departure of the Said Barre regime.
SORDA has good experience and capacity related community development activities and since its establishment, SORDA has implemented different projects Somalia, and particularly most of the projects were implemented in Somalia-Mogadishu, L /Shabelle, M/Shabelle, Galgaduud and Mudug regions of Somalia in partnership with UN agencies, International NGO’s and Somali Diaspora.
Among the Agencies that SORDA works and maintained with partnership for community development and supports are IOM, UNDP,EDC/USAID UNHCR, ILO, WFP, UNICEF/GF, Danish Refugee Council (DRC)Oxfam novib, UNFPA, US- Embassy for Somalia and Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW).
In addition to that, SORDA received Capacity Building from CARE international and Oxfam Novib aimed at strengthening institutional capacity that enabled them have effective internal policies and procedures and guided by a set of principles and shared values. SORDA abides by NGO code of conducts, more over, since SORDA is engaged in response and disaster and Mitigation. SORDA in a persuading mission has joined international and local networks who share same principles and values. Among that networks are Peace and Human right Network (PHRN).
SORDA has developed its strategic plan (2017-2023) sets out the key strategic objectives through which SORDA’s mission is to be achieved. In programming terms, these lead to the application of the following key programming principles in all of SORDA’s work.
